  2. Hi Sara! You chose some really inspiring quotes for this week. The quotes you chose show your passion for early childhood which is awesome! The quote "So I have built-in empathy for poor children, as well as a deep belief, based on my own life, that just because you're poor that doesn't mean you're inadequate" by Edward Zigler really spoke to me for various reasons. I often hear people, in general, talk about poorer children and make excuses as to why these children do not do well, but this statement disproves their talk! I have taught plenty of children who were poor, but they succeeded just as much or even more than the wealthier students in my class because I did not make excuses for them and provided them with the tools they needed to succeed.

  3. This passage speaks to me as it reminds me of many children with whom I have worked over the years.

"Reading is just one aspect of cognitive development and cognitive development is just one aspect of human development. A child's curiosity and belief that he or she can succeed are just an important to reading as knowing the alphabet."- Dr. Edward Zigler

The child is a bit shy and quiet. He sits back and waits for approval for most activities. This is his temperament. He has the fearful personality that prevents him from taking life challenges on head first. He is quite curious and observes everything happening around him. Once he is encouraged to take a bold step, he is capable and proud of his accomplishments. His reticence has likely delayed some of his language but his other languages kick in to give him a voice. Many children feel stifled and do not have the confidence to speak up. This is evident in older children as well as those just learning to speak.

In Early Childhood Education, we have the opportunity to spark curiosity as well as empower children to feel confident in their own abilities. The quote from Dr. Ziglar speaks to the need for children to be empowered and as an educator, I am reminded of my role in giving a child the gift of confidence.

  4. The quote, "We as professionals in the early childhood field have an opportunity to change a child's life for better," by Sandy Escobido is very important to remember when working with young children. We work with children on a daily basis for many hours a day, however, we have no idea what really goes on in their lives outside of school. Family systems are very complex and what is shown on the outside in public is not always the true picture of what is going on at home. Families have real struggles that they may not want to discuss with or ask educators for help with because they are embarrassed or do not feel comfortable asking for help. We must go to work each day with the intent to make a child's life better without knowing anything about the child other than what we are told or can see with our own eyes. Showing children attention, positive praise, love, support, and gaining their trust are just a few of the many ways we can make a positive change daily in a child's life.

  5. Great selections!

I agree. I don't think we stress the importance of reading enough. Reading is at times overlooked. With technology, iPads, tablets, reading is not at the top of the list. Including myself, I once stopped reading because I felt like I never had time. My jr year in college my basketball coach, stressed the importance of reading so much, that I decided to get back into reading. I often read self help books. I think reading opens your mind into new wonders.
    Again, great quotes!

  6. So I have built-in empathy for poor children, as well as a deep belief, based on my own life, that just because you're poor that doesn't mean you're inadequate."--- Edward Zigler, thank you for this quote . This quote speaks to me deeply , I grew up feeling inadequate because of factors out of my control. Now as a teacher I have learned that many of my educational struggles were rooted from my environment . If only I had someone knowledgeable to support my development better , I believe I wouldn't have struggled to read or write as much as a child. But now as a Head Start director I am blessed to be able to assist in assuring that none of my students leave my school without knowing they are enough to be all that the can dream of being.
